Character Education
Building Character at Bloxham CE Primary
At Bloxham CE Primary School, we believe that education is about more than just academic success—it’s about developing the whole child. That’s why we are proud to embed Character Education into everything we do. But what is Character Education, and why is it so important?
What is Character Education?
The Department for Education (DfE) defines Character Education as the development of key personal traits, values, and skills that prepare children to lead successful, fulfilling lives. It focuses on attributes such as resilience, integrity, kindness, perseverance, and responsibility—qualities that help children navigate challenges, build positive relationships, and contribute meaningfully to society.
The DfE has outlined six key benchmarks for schools to follow:
-
Virtues and Values – Clearly defined traits that schools aim to develop in pupils.
-
Curriculum Integration – Embedding character education into lessons.
-
Co-Curricular Activities – Clubs, enrichment, and leadership opportunities.
-
Community Engagement – Encouraging pupils to give back and engage with their wider community.
-
School Culture and Ethos – Staff role-modelling and fostering a positive environment.
-
Evaluation and Impact – Measuring how well character development is embedded.
Why is Character Education Important?
Character Education ensures that children are not only well-educated but also kind, responsible, and resilient individuals. Research shows that character traits like perseverance and self-discipline lead to higher academic achievement, better mental well-being, and stronger social skills. In today’s rapidly changing world, where adaptability and emotional intelligence are vital, Character Education equips our pupils with the tools they need to thrive in education, work, and life.
Character Education at Bloxham CE Primary
At Bloxham, our motto “Be. Build. Become.” reflects our commitment to developing character alongside academic excellence. Our vision, “Encourage one another and build each other up,” underpins all that we do, fostering a culture of support, respect, and personal growth. We embed character-building into our curriculum and wider school life in several ways:
-
Values-Driven Curriculum – Our lessons promote resilience, teamwork, and moral reasoning.
-
Leadership Opportunities – Pupils take on roles such as House Captains, School Council members, and Playground Leaders.
-
Enrichment Activities – Through music, drama, sports, and volunteering, children build confidence and teamwork skills.
-
Community Engagement – Pupils regularly visit Godswell Care Home, engage in charity fundraising, and participate in local events.
-
Positive School Culture – We celebrate kindness and perseverance through awards, assemblies, and daily interactions.
By embedding Character Education into every aspect of school life, we ensure that our pupils leave Bloxham as confident, compassionate, and responsible individuals, ready to make a positive impact in and on the world.
